The Abilities Fund: The Abilities Fund is committed to the economic advancement of people with disabilities and devoted to the fullest expression of their entrepreneurial spirit. To that end, the Fund develops and serves three primary markets-entrepreneurs with disabilities, micro-enterprise development organizations, and vocational rehabilitation agencies and other disability-related organizations-by offering a range of financial products, customized training, technical assistance, policy recommendations, and linkages to resources.

National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC). The NSTTAC is a national Technical Assistance and Dissemination Center funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). Issue Brief: The Basics of the National Council on Disability's Social Security Report The National Council on Disability (NCD) has published an issue brief as a follow-up to its 2005 report The Social Security Administration's Efforts to Promote Employment for People with Disabilities: New Solutions for Old Problems. The issue brief highlights the continuing number of beneficiaries who never leave the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) insurance rolls, and the need to increase the number of beneficiaries who enter, or reenter, the U.S. workforce. The brief discusses the need to identify new approaches that emphasize beneficiary control of career planning and the ability to access self-selected services and supports.

Law, Health Policy, and Disability Center (website) The Law, Health Policy, and Disability Center is an emerging leader in law, technology, education and research. Based at the University of Iowa College of Law, with offices in Washington, DC, and elsewhere, the center concentrates on public policy and its impact on persons with disabilities, with an emphasis on employment, self-determination and self-sufficiency.

Coordinating and Leveraging Long-Term Supports with Affordable and Accessible Housing for Persons with Disability: Maryland Case Study This case study describes an approach to public and private sector agencies coordinating and leveraging resources at a state and local level to expand affordable and accessible housing options for persons with developmental disabilities. Homes for America utilized low-income housing tax credits to set aside six units of housing in an affordable multifamily development to be converted to ownership at the end of a fifteen-year lease period for Medicaid beneficiaries.

Coordinating and Leveraging Long-Term Supports with Affordable Assisted Living in Public Housing: Florida Case Study This case study describes the development and operations of assisted living units coordinated with independent senior units in a public housing location (Titusville Towers in Titusville, Florida). Because this example uses an existing facility, replication of this case study demonstrates that time and cost will be substantially less than new construction of an assisted living facility. The Titusville Housing Authority received approval from HUD to designate it as seniors-only housing.

Coordinating and Leveraging Long-Term Supports with Licensed Affordable Assisted Living: Arkansas Case StudyThis case study describes how a private sector entity, NCB Development Corporation, helped to coordinate and galvanize the existing efforts of essential partners to develop, plan, and finance a new assisted living facility, and coordinate appropriate funding sources for operational and client service expenditures. The Gardens at Osage Terrace was developed under the Coming Home Program, a demonstration program of NCB Development Corporation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Growing Wealth, Inequality, and Housing in the United States While aggregate household net wealth grew from $25.9 trillion in 1995 to $50.1 trillion in 2004 (both in 2004 dollars), nearly 90 percent of the net gains occurred only among the top quartile of households in the wealth distribution. This paper discusses both household wealth and inequality growth, examines demographic factors behind the growth, and analyzes housing's role in it, using the Survey of Consumer Finances data collected by the Federal Reserve Bank.

New Online Resource on Assistive Technology for Persons with Dementia AT Dementia is a new online information resource on assistive technology for people with dementia and their caregivers. The website, developed by Trent Dementia Services Development Center (UK), includes perspectives on assistive technology's benefits and limitations, its ethical use, and current research and new technologies in development. It also includes information on how to obtain assistive technology and a searchable product database.

Beyond Cash and Counseling: The Second Generation of Individual Budget-Based Community Long-Term Care Programs for the Elderly This Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured report describes 10 operating individual budget model programs that serve older persons and identifies four areas of program design that are of particular importance to the success of the individual budget model. It also discusses how states have addressed these areas and draws key findings and implications in several areas such as level of funding, participant choice, support systems, and quality of care monitoring.

Older Americans Act: FY2006 Funding, FY2007 Proposals, and FY2008 Budget Request The impartial Congressional Research Service (CRS) released a report on February 15, 2007 on funding for the Older Americans Act, including the National Family Caregiver Support Program.
